I adore Halloween. This time of year, I often am taken back to my first job. It was seasonal, just for the month of October. My high school had an advertisement to work the haunted house located in the Holly Hotel, it was the next city over from where I lived. My friend and I decided it would be a perfect and fun way to make a little money.

I have to say, I was really excited with the thought of being a scarer at the restaurant filled with its own resident ghosts. There is a long and rich history of this historic hotel site. The entire block has stories of ghosts and happenings along what is dubbed “Battle Alley”. Check out their site, Holly HotelΒ to meet some of their resident ghosts. Unfortunately, they have discontinued the haunted house on the third floor ages ago, probably due to insurance reasons. All of the pictures on this post are from their site.

When we arrived, we (potential scarers) were ushered to the second floor to fill out an application, show proof we were able to work, and hired on the spot. We sat, getting to know each other. There were about twenty of us in total. Everyone was from the surrounding school districts. About half of us faced the double door to the hallway and the other half faced the street with a few, fairly large, windows with heavy drapes covering the windows. The room was filled with teenage noise that immediately stopped when a drape opened slightly as if someone was looking down at the street below. Problem was, there was nobody pulling back that drape. I remember looking at the shock on the others faces and thinking this was going to be pretty cool. I don’t know if it was a set-up or not, or if it was just one of the resident ghosts, but we were about to join their side.

For the month, I worked side by side with vampires, werewolves, ghosts, chain saw massacre man, Freddie, mad scientist, and zombies. Scaring all kinds of people who dared to enter the third floor. StarsWe had an encounter or two at the stairway with what we thought was a ghost, but it was really hard to tell when you are playing one yourself. I like to think that the resident ghosts enjoyed themselves during that month. Who knows, maybe they were able to show themselves from time to time.

It was an incredible experience I will never forget. I always laugh, telling people it was the best job I ever had. I made friends that I would not have met unless I had this opportunity. The Holly Hotel is an absolute wonderful place any time of the year, but it holds a special place in my heart.

To those of you who celebrate Halloween, or take the kiddos Trick or Treating, remember the Teal Pumpkin ProjectΒ make great memories, have a safe and fantastic Halloween!!

With much love,

  1. What a fun job! I can see why you remember it so fondly. I was once the Easter bunny in a small Iowa town (hired by the local florist to do deliveries) and I have to admit that wasn’t nearly so much fun!
