When Fashion & Nature Collide – Mixed Media

Mixed media is a technique involving the use of two or more artistic mediums, such as ink and pastel, digital painting and watercolor, photos and line layering that are combined in a single composition. Decorative paper can be used as a filler background between the different layers of mediums. Antique book plates and stained paper can be used as a part of the foundation or placed over an object to give it an aged patina. This type of art provides endless possibilities. Just an example is altered objects, including books and boxes, handmade greeting cards, artist trading cards (ATCs), tags, art journals, and book/journal making.

This month we had so many choices for this edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide. The above image is my contribution to the project. Sketching and creating smart objects to place about is one of my favorite things.

I was instantly drawn to these pairings for this month. My art inspiration was fueled by these wonderful images by Dominique from 3C Style, Darren from Arty Plantsman, and Roda from Growing Self. Please visit their sites to get a fantastic view of When Fashion and Nature Collide.

Let’s talk about inspiration!

This Partridge Plymouth Rock, Silk dress, Venetian mask from Italy, and vintage feather hat sparked so many ideas. Even though the mask didn’t make the final piece of my art, it’s a fun piece that looks great in a 5×7 as an accent piece for a grouping, or for an art and craft.

This won my heart at first sight. The yellow coat, blue butterfly, and the moraea flower blend together like they were made from the same fabric. The stunning colors play off each other perfectly. That beautiful blue is my “it” color this year. Visit Darren’s site Arty Plantsman for his better than life drawing of  the moraea. I am in complete awe of his artistry. I am just over the moon about this. This is also the color portion of my contribution and one of the sketches Leopard Fray on vintage lined library paper below.

Pink! I love pink, so this struck a chord with me. The whole look of the flowers that I want in my own garden, amazing jeans, and a handbag that is beyond beautiful. I could not help but want to sketch these jeans and shoes. Two of the three sketches are part of the contribution and all can be used as a set.

  17. I’ve seen all of the posts and I will duplicate my comment on all because I take it as a whole from all four of you.

    You folks have an uncanny eye. From chickens to flowers to bugs to ephemera, you all bring it all together in a way that is not only pleasing to the eye, but is inspired. The way Dominique translates those colors, textures, and shapes into fashion is nothing less than brilliant. My hat is off to you all! I love this series and can’t wait to see more. ❤️💕❤️💕❤️

    1. As I was posting the above comment, I realized that I have done Lisa a disservice. I’ve always thought of mixed media as a collection of ephemeral objects whose value is much more than the objects themselves as they stand on their own. Lisa’s work is so much more than that. Her drawings and mixed media works are wonderful. Every artist involved in this project complement each other amazingly well.
