When Fashion and Nature Collide -Feline Good

Feline Good

Feline couture is feline good! Cats flourish at being the ruler of their domain. Who cannot relate to being King or Queen of their castle. The power of animal fashion is everywhere in pattern. It has purred its way into print and our hearts. Cats have been featured on runways for years as cat motifs have ruled many fashion lines. The cat inspiration hit us and we fell in love with many famous cats, wearables, and products.

Welcome to our November edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide. On the third Wednesday of each month, we will post a new collaborative edition. You will see art, beautiful fashion and accessories styled by Dominique from 3C Style, flowers and beautiful art by Darren from the Arty Plantsman, and original art from me Lisa@Lismore Paper. Soon we will be opening a shop on Threadless which offers our products under the Fashioned By Nature Label. Crossing our paws it will open December 1st just in time for Christmas! If you missed the t-shirt post, click here.

So what’s all the purring about…

GARFIELD

I am partial to this feline. I remember receiving a stuffed toy in the 2nd grade and cherishing it for years. A little secret, I still have it. Creating art inspired by this famous cat was fun. Watercolor and digital enhancement made this #eyeCatching piece a bit art deco. I completed a few different versions. I enjoy adding eyelashes to everything I can, as you can see in the first photo above. Darren’s flower the Calochortus barbatus hit it on the mark, it’s a beauty. Dominique’s style from the cat print shirt and perfect complimenting hat mimic Garfield. Doesn’t she look gorgeous!

CHESHIRE CAT

The Cheshire Cat is a fictional cat popularized by Lewis Carroll in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This cat is mostly remembered for the wicked smile that I just love. The incredibly witty character has the most wonderful quotes. My favorite quote, “Every adventure requires a first step.”

Dominique looks beautiful and the colors match this Cheshire Cat perfectly…look at those cattails! Darren’s flower looks like a wonderland creation, I love the bell shape. For the quote art, I layered paper and you can see Dominique’s colors have been placed on top then blended into the paper. The eyes are layers of water color splotches with colored pencil on top and the smile was created using the technique of dropping water onto the paper in a pattern then letting the color fill in. I scanned at high quality, then added the pupils and shadows digitally along with the lettering.

  1. You know, I always felt that Lewis Carroll based the Cheshire Cat on a crescent moon at dawn. If you look at it, it looks very much like the grin of a cat. Every time I see one, I see a cat.

But, the more logical explanation is that I’m insane…

      1. You are right Lisa. Our collaboration is a lot of work but brings so much fun and I wish Darren and you could visit soon. Or we could all go to Mexico and dive and see those Calochortus flowers up close. 😀
