When Fashion and Nature Collide- Autumn

Embracing Autumn. Glorious tones of gold, crimson, and endless shades of browns orchestrate a superb finale. Our hands are warmed by rich and delectable cups of coffee that burst with a flavor-filled aroma. The sweet chipmunks and squirrels are busy collecting their harvest of nuts. The berries hang thick on trees providing food for the woodland creatures of all sorts. If you are in my part of the world, it’s time to prepare for winter and celebrate the beauty of the season. Just for good measure, black cats, spiders and pumpkins round out the month of October. Snuggle in and come on the journey with me.

Roasted in small batches, the scent wafts towards you as you open the thick wooden door of a downtown coffeehouse. Good conversation, an old world feel, and people watching. An informal club of regulars who gather over a hot cup and a sweet treat. Darren’s photography of his local coffee house and Dominique’s gorgeous flat lay inspired this paper with old coffee invoices and graphics. It even includes one of my favorite illustrations by Elizabeth Blackwell. There is also more to come with a coffee design in a special post.

Darren has created some life-like drawings of walnuts in many forms. He is such an incredible artist who truly amazes me each and every month. The laughs the three of us share about our subject matter was quite fun and I relived being a young girl again. If you could see behind the scenes of these editions you would crack up! Darren was kind enough to allow me creative freedom with his drawings. There is also more to come with this nut in a special post.

It’s October and I could not resist to include some of my favorite Halloween ephemera. Last year Dominique did an amazing spread with this recreated Black Cat Paper. I have included a few other trick or treat goodies. These are great for journal and craft products.

  8. This is a great post Lisa. You have such a creative mind and your paper designs are delightful. I don’t own a printer (I live on a Narrowboat in UK) nor do I have any room for artistic things, but I love looking at the collaborations that you, Darren and Dominique offer. I sort of go into dream mode and think about scenarios of a different sort of living. That is so inspiring. Thanks to all three of you. Your creations are a unique presentation that shows collaboration in the world, is so much more desirable, than division (which invades our political and religious existences). Thank you so much for the escape to a better world!

      1. A Narrowboat (17 metres long by 2 metres wide), is small living Lisa. However we have everything we need. We have a full size bed (pulls out to width of the boat) and a small guest bed is convertible into our saloon sofa. We have a woodstove with a backboiler for heat and hot water, a gas stove and oven (although we can cook on the woodstove when it is lit). We have solar panels that provide us with enough power to run smaller energy items like lights, our small fridge, TV, laptop, etc. We do need to run our engine to power vacuum cleaner, microwave and washing machine, but we run them sparingly.
        There isn’t a lot of room for clothes…. And it requires a fortitude sometimes. Dominique’s organised wardrobe, always makes me smile. Everything I own is rolled up tightly and squeezed into small drawers and a closet space that Dominique would consider useful for only two jackets. The boat is all wood finished inside (including the walls and ceiling), decorated with the original nature artwork of Liz Garnett Orme (a gifted but likely poor, artist). My favourite is a painting of badgers in a woodland scene.
        Usually, in the March to November period, we are out on the UK canals and rivers (it is not a sea worthy vessel). We move every few days on a meandering journey (top speed is only 4 miles per hour) and choose most mooring spots in countryside as much as possible. Our view is nearly always beautiful. We always have ducks and water life around us so that is special, and connected to nature.
        There are downsides… We did break down this year and it can feel a worry if that happens. We must find places to fill with water and to empty a chemical toilet (like a caravan) Also, without a car, we have to give ourselves time for everything. But even those things do not detract from the beautiful life in a mobile home, living a nomadic life. In winter months, it becomes a litlle more difficult. Rivers spend more time in flood and some areas of canal network are shut for maintenance, so we head for our marina where our home can be parked with similar craft, hooked up to an electric shoreline for washing machine and vacuum operation, and life goes on. We do tend to go away at this time (mostly to the ever warm, Thailand, with its friendly people, sandy beaches and temple rich Buddhist culture.
        I hope this gives you a little glimpse (and for Dominique and Darren, too). 😉

Autumn is such a truly an inspiring season and the colours…I remember your black cat design from last year, and the trick or treat cat is so sweet. I have a little black kitten calling into my garden every day at the moment. He is a sweetie. x

  10. And just in time. No kidding. October in Texas can and will be warm. However, we’ve enjoyed a couple of cool fronts. This morning was one of those mornings. I broke out my Mr. Rogers house sweater and sweatpants. The coffee maker had just squeezed out the final drops of brew. As I sipped my first dark roast of the morning I opened this post. Just perfect. I always love your vintage Halloween displays. The coffee inventory (?) graphic for background made me smile. The creative October juices from the trio flows once again.   11. This is a fantastic post, Lisa. Love all of your paper designs, and the Going Nuts is sooo beautiful! Right in my wheelhouse. You are truly gifted and inspiring sis. Cant’ wait to show you my Halloween home decor for this year. It is also inspired by one of your artwork, the white pumpkin and butterfly paper.       1. Aww, thanks Lisa! I fell the same sis. I wanted to complete my Halloween decor this weekend and take photos of it but got distracted by other important things. I’ll try to do that this week.     1. Thank you! Its fun to read each others posts. We have the same theme and access to all the pictures but each of us put our own style to it. Darren was kind enough to allow me creative freedom with his drawing. I really enjoyed it.

I have downloaded and can’t wait to hang near my coffee area in the kitchen.
